Preseason Week 3: Golden Nuggets, and Fantasy Tidbits

We still don’t believe Darren Sproles will average double digit touches this season. However, he does have a very clear cut role, and also appears to be the handcuff to Shady. We had to move him up the Draft Cheat Sheet. He’s still a valuable fantasy commodity, and a safe bet as an RB3.

Ben Roethlisberger has always been our safety valve at QB in fantasy drafts. He’s been a solid option the last few seasons, and looks at the top of his game. We expect him to thrive in 2014. Big Ben currently presents nice QB value late in drafts. We love him as a value pick in 2 QB, and super flex leagues.

The Steelers are intent on integrating second year speedster Markus Wheaton into the passing game. He’s a good player, who looks to be over his rookie jitters. We’ve had to push him up the Cheat Sheet a smidgen, after witnessing this type of commitment from the Steelers offensive powers-that-be. It’s rookie Martavis Bryant we love the most from a physical standpoint. He’s somebody we quickly identified inside the NFL Combine during wide receiver drills. The super-sized deep threat is coming on quickly. He’s fantasy gold late in keeper league drafts.

Since May 8, we’ve told you repeatedly how incredible Kelvin Benjamin is going to be with Cam Newton in Carolina. He’s been our #1 or #2 fantasy rookie receiver for months, while other “experts” have had him ranked outside the Top 5, and are just now telling you to get on the bandwagon. The reason is, we scouted him live. Everything we saw at Florida State Pro Day, we’ve seen throughout training camp and preseason. Get him on your team.

Stevan Ridley looked pretty good on Friday Night, so we aren’t going to get too low on him despite the lack of touches and snaps. He’ll be valuable this season, even if frustrating. Shane Vereen continues to show us why he’s the most exciting Patriots running back to own in fantasy. If healthy- he’ll be a PPR nightmare for your fantasy opponents.

We don’t trust anything related to Eli Manning’s arm. But, we still LOVE Rashad Jennings. He’s going to be a top flight fantasy option, and he continues to come at a relative bargain in fantasy drafts. Rookie Andre Williams has cemented his status as one of fantasy’s most important handcuffs. He’s even got upside to become a stand alone fantasy option on his own, if the Giants abort their pitiful passing attack for a run-heavy approach.

The Jets run game is already on point. We’ll continue being bullish on Chris Johnson as a nice RB3 option. Chris Ivory looked powerful and explosive, as well. He also caught the ball. Barring injury, his role is expected to increase this season. He’s going to vulture his fair share of goal line looks. We are going to have to get a little bit higher on Chris Ivory in the next edition of the Cheat Sheet.

Geno Smith – Until we die; we are going to continue to ride with him as a sleeper QB option until he proves us wrong. He’ll be a steal in 2QB or super flex leagues. Smith is a much better player than anyone gives him credit for. He scored over 20 fantasy points per game over the last month of the 2013 season.

It looks like Jets rookie TE Jace Amaro is working through the rough start he had to training camp. We told you that even though he was our #3 ranked rookie TE prospect, he’s our #1 rookie TE fantasy option. Things are coming to fruition, we really like what we saw last night. He’s a solid late round flier in drafts. Amaro should become Geno’s #2 option in short order.

Speaking of rookie tight ends, we LOVED seeing Packers rookie Richard Rodgers running with the ones. The son of an NFL coach, he’s been preparing for this is whole life. Rodgers is ready to contribute immediately, his athleticism is astounding. The Rodgers to Rodgers connection should be a dynamic one for years to come. He’s neck and neck with Amaro for that #1 rookie TE spot, and could be an absolute steal late in drafts.

By bringing up the Packers, we get to talk about Eddie Lacy– a player we’ve preached about since 2012. His feet are one of the most special traits we’ve ever scouted. Last week we went on record, on-air, to tell all of RosterWatch Nation that Lacy is in the discussion for us at the #3 spot in fantasy drafts. Of course, we caught a lot of grief for that. Now who looks smart? Lacy could easily finish as the #1 RB in all of fantasy this year. He’s a monster, and we love him. It makes you wonder if he’s going to steal some touchdowns from Aaron Rodgers this year.

Blake Bortles is the absolute truth. Our #1 NFL Draft QB prospect unites with precocious general manager David Caldwell and inspirational head coach Gus Bradley to form an imposing triumvirate in the AFC South, while owner Shahid Khan twists his mustache in delight for years to come.

Toby Gerhart may look unspectacular, but you know what you are getting- volume. We like him, a lot. We moved Marqise Lee up the board last week, even though we think he’s a body-catcher- he’s getting too many looks to ignore. He’s a rookie you can draft much later than the others, who could have similar production.

My money says Jags receiver Allen Hurns makes the Trashman’s radar sometime this year.

Nobody trusts Darren McFadden at this point, and they shouldn’t. We are probably apologists, but we think as a 1B to MJD’s 1A- Run DMC may be able to carve out a lightning role similar to what we saw from his spectacular college career at Arkansas, or even the flashes we saw early in his career with the Raiders while paired with bruiser Michael Bush. He’s going to be a decent value late in fantasy drafts as an RB4 with some upside. The Raiders will be a very run-heave offense, and McFadden is good enough in the passing game- he’ll also get some run when they are playing from behind as you’d expect in the AFC West. He has a better chance of staying healthy in a split backfield.

It’s MJD, though, who has our attention. He’s regained the physical form that made him a Fantasy Football Hall-of-Famer. He’s going to be a solid RB2 this year. The bowling ball offers nice value in fantasy drafts with a RD7 ADP. He’ll be on some of our teams, for sure.

  1. McCoy, Ball, Jeffrey, C Patterson, Rashad Jennings, Roddy, Gore, Ryan,T Williams, Cooks, Ertz, Cutler, Hunter, Andre WillIams, Josh Gordon, West. I drafted this team using your cheat sheet. First, what do you think. Second who do I drop to pick up a D ST and kicker?!?!

    1. Sorry, I’m in a 10 team PPR, and I had 1st pick.

    2. xraytakr-

It’s going to be hard to roster 2 QBs all year in a 10 team league. You probably need to go ahead and consider clearing up roster space by dropping Cutler. I know, he seems poised for a breakout season- but that’s probably the deal. Next, wait for the word on Josh Gordon’s suspension. If he’s out for the year, he’s the easy drop.

If not- you’ll have to consider Terrance Williams or Terrance West. Good luck!

  2. Ok, thanks. Wasn’t planning on hanging on to both for long, just whichever was more consistent. Which Terrance would you lean toward cutting first?

    1. In a PPR- we’d lean towards cutting Terrance West

  3. Along those same lines, is there anyone on my team you would cut to pick up CJ Anderson, D Freeman, Ahmad Bradshaw, or T Kelce? Also which D do you like better for the long haul: Bucs, Browns, or Bills. Sorry for the barrage of questions.

    1. That’s a good question- we LOVE the Bucs Def this year- only problem is it’s a pretty high scoring division they play in- so depends on how your defenses are scored. TB will allow points and yards, but they will get turnovers and make big plays. Buffalo is a solid option, as well- they get the Jets and Dolphins 4 times this year 🙂

We’d consider Kelce or Freeman in a PPR over Terrance West

      1. So you like the Bills even without Kiko? Forgot to mention the Saints, Ravens, and Browns are also available. Bucs were taken as soon as I asked that question previously.

        1. Saints are a big play option. We’d check for the Patriots also

  4. Thanks Byron, you guys are the best! I do miss your old time slot though, haha.

  5. So you still like Ertz over Kelce in my situation?

  6. xraytakr-

Yes, we like Ertz but he’s a gamble. Kelce is a good stash for you, if you can swing it.

  7. Thanks again!

  8. Using the cheat sheet in 12 team: J. Graham, Brees, R. Jennings, C. Patterson, Harvin, R. Rice, MJD, K. Benjamin, Devonta Freeman, D. Hopkins, Andre Williams, P. Rivers, R. Woods, J. Matthews

what do y’all think? Lacy, Peyton, Demaryius, Gio, L. Bell, Cameron were all kept so they were available for me to pick. I’m guessing i’ll flex Hopkins in the first 2 weeks since Ray Ray is suspended

    1. GRH – God I would love that team. It’s hard to believe you drafted it in a 12-teamer when Lacy, Peyton, Demaryius, Gio, L. Bell, Cameron were all kept. very, very good work.

      1. Thanks, I was freaking out about being 10th pick. Love your work on Orangebloods, Alex!
