Some brief thoughts on Thursday and Sundays contests:
– Kansas City QB Alex Smith and WR Dwayne Bowe are a match made in hades. Smith’s weak arm just doesn’t cater to a player of Bowe’s ilk. The pass catcher will have some good days this year and probably just as many bad ones. If you can sell Bowe based on name recognition now, do so. Otherwise, wait until his next big game and ship him off.
– Eagles RB LeSean McCoy, barring injury, will be fantasy’s top running back at season’s end.
– Chip Kelly’s offense doesn’t seem to focus on the tight end. Those hoping Brent Celek or Zach Ertz will produce consistently appear to be out of luck for massive targets. A small hope remains for both players in fantasy however, as Kelly clearly utilizes TEs at a greater yards/target ratio than most any 2013 NFL team.
– Green Bay RB Eddie Lacy is the best talent at running back, but Johnathan Franklin – future mayor of LA and RosterWatch favorite – will stay involved even when Lacy returns. The situation could approach a time share.
– WR A. J. Green can only be as good as the man throwing him the ball, and his QB Andy Dalton is inconsistent.
– On a similar note, there is too much talent at receiver and tight end these days to expect constant production out of anyone who catches the ball. You’re going to see more boom or bust games this year than you have in the past.
– Bengals RB Giovani Bernard looks hungry out there. He has the speed to reach the corners, so look for him to get many a red-zone carry.
– Demarco Murray owners have to be happy with his production, but the Dallas offense has to find a balance. No Dallas receiver, besides TE Jason Witten, topped 40 yards this week.
– The Cowboys defense is one worth holding onto.
– There are too many mouths to in St. Louis, and QB Sam Bradford isn’t good enough to find ways to feed all of them. TE Jared Cook may have peaked in Week 1.
– Rams RB Daryl Richardson is hurt, and foot injuries are notorious for lingering. Isaiah Pead should be picked up in all formats.
– Titans WR Kenny Britt can be dropped in all leagues. There are too many options in Tennessee who aren’t injury-plagued. The lotto ticket has been scratched and it’s time to realize it’s a loser. Move on.
– RB Chris Johnson won’t see the end-zone much this season. Know that you’ll get 8 to 10 points on a regular basis, but not much more, and plan accordingly.
– Nate Washington is the only Titans receiver worth playing consistently, but Kendall Wright is approaching that status quickly..
– The Eddie Royal dream has evaporated before our very eyes. I’d hold onto him at least one more week though, just to make sure this game wasn’t the anomaly.
– Browns TE Jordan Cameron should be started regardless of who’s throwing him the ball.
– Pray WR Josh Gordon does not get traded. He and Cameron are the only things holding the Cleveland offense together, and his fantasy lines will reflect that notion.
– It’s RBBC in Cleveland for the near and maybe distant future. Don’t hold onto Willis McGahee if there is someone worth using the roster spot on.
– I still don’t think the Vikings know what to do with Cordarrelle Patterson.
– Time to sell stock in Buccaneers. That ship is sinking fast and Josh Freeman plays with snakes.
– Pats’ WR Julian Edelman isn’t living up to his targets..
– Bill Belichick doesn’t need Stevan Ridley to win, and that is going to continue to be extremely frustrating to his owners.
– RB Brandon Bolden is this year’s Danny Woodhead, at least until Shane Vereen gets back. Don’t be afraid to take a chance on him.
– Saints TE Jimmy Graham is worth that second-round pick. This season there will be plenty of good tight ends but only a few elite ones. Graham is one of them.
– Sigh, no Saints RB is worth playing with the exception of Darren Sproles.
– The Cardinals need a running game if that high-flying Bruce Arians offense is to work properly. There’s no good excuse to only be able to score seven points on the Saints.
– The Redskins may have the worst defense in NFL football right now. Exploit that match-up every week starting next against Oakland and Terrelle Pryor.
– Even when Reggie Bush gets healthy, Joique Bell will retain standalone value in all formats. He’s too good to keep off the field.
– Lions WR Ryan Broyles is coming up. Stash him now.
– Now that’s the 30-point Cam Newton we know and love. The Panthers opened up the passing game, and they won. Who would have thought? Hopefully, that game plan sticks.
– WR Steve Smith is beneficial to the Panthers even when he isn’t getting the ball. The attention he gets bodes well for those around him. It’s an unfortunate truth for Smith owners.
– Did the Giants play a football game yesterday? You can’t tell by the stats. Or even glancing at it occasionally. I’ve never seen anything like it.
– RB David Wilson looked extremely fast on the TD that got away. Buy low on him – a fantasy game of 12 carries for 60 and a TD looks a lot better today than the 11 for 30-something he ended up with when the play was called back.
– The Ravens defense hasn’t given up a touchdown in two games. Hold em if you got em.
– WR Torrey Smith reminds me of Stevie Johnson of the last few years– chalk him up for nine points a game. You will come not to expect much more.
– Miami is 3-0, and I’m not exactly sure how. The only consistent fantasy player is QB Ryan Tannehill.
– As much as we want it not to be true, there is a timeshare in the Miami backfield, and as long as they are winning, it will stay that way.
– Even with a limping Roddy White, Falcons WR Harry Douglas still isn’t worth starting, and neither is Roddy White..
– As long as Steven Jackson is out, I’d feel safe about using Jacquizz Rodgers and Jason Snelling.
– The Jets might actually support two fantasy receivers this season. Both Stephen Hill and Santonio Holmes can produce with a rocket armed QB like Geno Smith.
– As I suspected, an injury to Chris Ivory is what led to the Bilal Powell show in New York. Ivory owners have to hope it’s not severe, or Powell may make the backfield his with another showing like Sunday’s next week. The Jets did win a division game riding Powell heavily and the game his showing was impressive.
– San Fran has to get back to a power running game. I know they like Colin Kaepernick’s arm, but that’s not going to win them games on a consistent basis.
– If you own Ahmad Bradshaw, you should ship him while the going is good. The Colts didn’t trade a first round pick to not have Trent Richardson be the focal point of the running game.
– Don’t be fooled by Seattle WR Sidney Rice’s performance on Sunday. Percy Harvin is still the only Seahawks receiver worth owning.
– While A.J. Green is not match-up proof, Jaguars WR Cecil Shorts is. Amazing…
– Steelers WR Antonio Brown is a rare talent. Expect more big games once RB Le’veon Bell returns to give Pittsburgh a running game worth trying to stop.
